Volcano lightning in Chile

Volcanic plumes trigger some spectacular phenomena. In Chile, we see lightning within the ash plume. Mesmerizing footage really.

Volcano lightning

These flashes of lightning within an ash plume are somewhat common. Charged particles are transported upwards in a turbulent cloud. The lightning is the visible electric discharge of these particles.
